Sitting at ‘our beach’ (the rocky beach in walking distance from our house) I was looking out at the beauty of the day and listening to the kids play and every now and then reading a few paragraphs from a book. As I was sitting there and meditating a little bit, the thought came to my mind, ‘does God have a plan B? After all, God has a plan for each of our lives and He also grants us a free will to choose whether or not we follow His plan. But, when we are disobedient and do not follow His plan, does He come up with another plan for us? What if we fail? What if we run like Jonah? What if circumstances change? Does God’s plan also change?
The Bible clearly teaches that God has a plan for each of us and He is a God of second chances. When we fail, He does not give up on us. He is persistent. When we come to Him in repentance, He will always forgive us and He will always give us another chance.
However, God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is not swayed by the ways of men. He is not turned by circumstances. He is constant and sure and we can count on Him. God has a plan and purpose for each of our lives and that plan and purpose, like God, never changes.
However, sometimes we fail and we get off of God’s plan. Sometimes we choose to go our own way. Does this mean God’s plan has changed? I guess the real question to consider is, what exactly is God’s plan? God’s plan is very simple: to know Him and to glorify Him. No matter what we do in life, if we are growing to know Him more and if we are glorifying Him in all that we do, then God’s plan is not thwarted. When it comes to the actual circumstances of our lives, God uses those things to bring us closer to Him and to bring glory unto Himself. For example, let’s say God opens a door of opportunity for you, yet you choose a different path. Does God’s plan change? Perhaps as you go down the path you have chosen, you learn and grow in your walk with God and you begin to bring Him more glory. Are you not in God’s plan? Think about it. Sometimes, God will open and close doors and lead us down one path or another. No matter how many paths in life we take, whether they were God’s intent or not, God will use those paths we have chosen with all its twists and turns in order to bring us closer to Him. I know I my life I have take many detours. I have stubbornly chose my own way on several occasions. Yet, through it all, God has been faithful. His plan for me to know Him and to glorify Him has not changed, no matter where I am in life.
So, the answer to the question is not so clear cut. In asking the question, does God have a plan B, I would say yes and no. God’s plan for us never changes, so no, there is no plan B. Even if we rebel and are disobedient and God’s plan is not fulfilled in our plans, God’s actual plan is still the same. Yet, God uses the detours in life that we take in our own choosing to still fulfill His plan in us, so yes, God does have a plan B. What do you think?
