TALK, WALK, and STOP

Being a leader requires great wisdom. Most all leaders struggle with the pressure of the task. The constant struggle for any leader is knowing how to speak in a way that will motivate people to buy-in to the vision that the leader has for the organization. Below are a few principles that every leader should consider as they strive to be a great leader:

  • Great leaders know how to TALK.

 

One of the key tasks of any leader is to convince people to follow. Every leader has a vision. They know where they want to take the organization that they lead, they know how to get there, and they have a set of goals to accomplish. The hard part is convincing others in the organization to buy-in to the vision and to join the leader in accomplishing the goals that will get them to where they want to be. Convincing others requires wisdom in how the leader talks. The leader must be tactful and strategic. There are certain things that must be said, but how you say it and when you say it is a whole different story. Being tactful in how a leader communicates the vision is essential to the health and growth of the organization. The leader must also be strategic. You cannot reveal the full scope of the vision until the people are ready. You must feed them small portions at a time. A leader may have an idea, but, he or she must reveal certain parts of the vision at strategic times. This may require sharing things with some people and not with others. This may require waiting until the right opportunity presents itself. Being tactful and strategic is a must in how a leader talks.

  • Great leaders know how to WALK.

 

A great leader must never overlook his or her personal life. A leader must know to live right. A great leader is one of integrity and character. It is one who does the right thing even when no one is looking. A great leader lives above reproach. A person who lives above reproach is one that is not easily accused of wrong doing or impure motives.

  • Great leaders know how to STOP.

 

Many leaders fail when they insist on having their way in their time. It is often said that a great leader is one who, when plans fail, they always have another plan. You see, a great leader always has a plan. When circumstances hinder or deters the plan, a great leader knows who to adjust and develop a new plan. A great leader must know when he or she has hit a brick wall. The leader must know how to stop and evaluate the situation and develop a new plan. The vision may never change, but how you get there is often fluid. If you insist that there is only one way to fulfill the vision, you will fail. However, if you adjust and constantly create new goals and plans, then you will succeed. In leadership, the point is not in how you get there, but getting there. Leading an organization to fulfill a vision requires a constant change of plans. Changing plans is not an indication of weakness or failure, it is an indication of wisdom and success.

The bottom line of being a great leader is to never give up on the vision. When the leader gives up, so will the people who follow and the organization will crumble. The leader must stay fresh with new ideas and goals to bring the organization to fulfill its desired destiny. As a leader, never give up. Look at failed plans as an opportunity to develop a better plan. Look at roadblocks as an opportunity for a strategic detour. Never lose sight of the vision. Keep your eyes on the prize.
